Abstract

The article analyses the Ukrainian linguistic situation, which is characterised by the factual triple coding: the Russian language, the Ukrainian language, and a peculiar phenomenon of transitional nature, the so called surzhyk. Alongside with its purely linguistic characteristics, the article considers extra-linguistic causes of emergence of this phenomenon. The study touches the problem of inter-linguistic convergence of two closely related languages, and the question of the influence of one language on the other, determined by both linguistic, and extra-linguistic factors, first and foremost by the issue of prestige of use of one or another linguistic code.
