Abstract
The paper considers the views of the Hungarian liberal politicians – Joseph Eötvös, Francis Deák and others – on the country’s ethno-linguistic diversity. After the defeat of the Revolution of 1848–1849, they did not give up their political creed that ethnic groups living on the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary form a unifi ed political nation, but get more inclined to satisfy linguistic and cultural demands of non-Magyar peoples by maintaining the principle of individuals’ legal equality and exploiting the possibilities of decentralized self-governance.
