- Abstract
- The article is a continuation of the author's work, begun in the previous issue of the journal, on images/symbols of Light in the calendar rites of Russians in the context of the regeneration of demographic structure of society and the cosmic/natural renewal of the image of the world. If the sacred image of the world from Christmas to New Year is the pan-sacredness of the cosmic-divine vertical Heaven-Earth with the miracle of open Heavens and associations of Christ the baby, then the Orthodox folk image of the Epiphany celebration is the splendor of sacred-light ethnically meaningful snow spaces with the miracle of renewal of earthly waters and associations of the baptism rite, childhood, youth, brides, and grooms. The peasant sign of the celebration is the ritual pastry in the form of horses as symbols of the spring tillage and possibly of the mythical-poetic image of solar horses. The Northern Russian ethnographic makeup of the Epiphany celebration, with its perceptions of gone ancestors as invisible Yuletide saints, is very expressive. The author's corollary is: the World and our ancestors in this World intended to live in accordance with the principles/laws/rituals of the cosmic-divine Light, the cosmic-natural Light.
