- Abstract
- The author examines the connection between terrorist acts in Egypt against tourists from economically developed countries (Western Europe, USA, Japan) and policies of Egypt's government that attempt to prevent contacts between the tourists, who visit mainly global heritage places, and the locals. Western international organizations counterpose the archaeological heritage of the Ancient Egypt as a "cradle of civilization" to the present day Muslim Egypt. The author argues that mass media, which essentially shape the public opinion in Western countries, create the image of the Muslim Egyptian culture as "barbarian" and reproduce the notion of ancient Egyptian heritage as "belonging" to the culture of the West.
