Abstract

This article examines the trends of changing entrepreneurs position in Montenegro on the basis of selfassessments of their material and social-class position. In the modern societies the entrepreneurship gets “activated” both in the developed market economies as well as in the transitioning ones. In Montenegro, this issue has been particularly important. A specific entrepreneurial activity went on here caused by the country’s delicate position, which further influenced the slow development of entrepreneurial sector in comparison to other Eastern European countries. Considering the changes in material position of the entrepreneurial layer in the post-socialist period, we’ve relied on the data of a survey of the entrepreneurs – representatives of small and medium sized enterprises. These studies data confirm that in this period there was an increase of the entrepreneurs’ economic opportunities and their material position, the growth of this layer and its heterogeneity: although the majority of entrepreneurs consider themselves as the representatives of the middle class, many of them affiliate themselves to the higher or lower layers of this class.
