Abstract
Max Scheler's philosophical sociology contains a deep critique of the cultural and anthropological foundations of Western civilization. The cultural type of a person of Western civilization is characterized by Scheler as unbalanced: he is not sufficiently focused inside himself, on self-improvement, so he is aggressively and expansively directed to the outside world. Developing the views of J. Vico, Scheler concludes that a person of Western civilization is potentially prone to what is called “civilized barbarism".
