Abstract
We consider 1 features of mothers ' behavior in the Russian labor market in the 1990s, as well as in the era of relative “capitalist stability” in the 2000s. the Data allow us to make some retrospective estimates of women's combination of work and motherhood in the previous decades, starting from the 1940s. The main provisions of the article are that in the 1990s and 2000s, motherhood was carried out in conditions of gradually weakening institutional support and increasing the role of personal responsibility. Informal kinship and social networks were becoming increasingly popular. however, their strengthening, corresponding to the degree of weakening of institutions, did not occur. The orientation of women mothers to participate in the labor market was consistently high, regardless of their ideas about the “main role” of women in the family and society. The adaptation of mothers to changing conditions was forced to be flexible and required intensive labor efforts (a combination of domestic and paid work).
