Abstract
Elections can both contribute to the establishment of democracy and become a cover for an autocratic system. Important criteria are used to assess whether the organization and conduct of elections meet democratic standards. The author offers a classification of indicators of the level of democratic elections. They are used to analyze the electoral process in Russia, its strengths and weaknesses, and assess its compliance with the criteria of democracy.
