Abstract
Václav Havel, the leader of the «Velvet Revolution», last president of Czechoslovakia and first president of the Czech Republic, considered theater his main vocation. In the present article, the author reviews his artistic path, from the early play «The Garden Party» (1963) to the last piece «Leaving» (2007) written after his resignation from the presidential post. In Havel’s dramaturgy, topical satire is combined with the Theatre of Absurd techniques, masterly use of the language and play with classical tradition (Čapek, Goethe, Shakespeare, Chekhov).
