[full_description] => Переименование Шпицбергена в Свальбард в 1925 г., безусловно, имело политическую подоплеку: целью его было закрепление за Норвегией “исторических прав” на архипелаг. “Свальбардская” версия в норвежском обществе получила широкую поддержку, но подверглась критике со стороны европейских, в первую очередь датских исследователей, размещавших Свальбард в восточной Гренландии. Однако еще в XVI–XVIII вв. в Европе появилась серия исландских карт, на которых Свальбард или “Ледяной берег” находился между 68 и 72° с.ш. Сопоставив картографические материалы с исландскими сагами, исландские картографы пришли к выводу о том, что легендарный Свальбард располагался на восточно-гренландском берегу и никак не мог быть Шпицбергеном.
