- Abstract
- The article highlights the genesis and development of historical and political ideas in the Ukrainian society of the second half of the seventeenth century, mainly among the upper layers of the Cossacks. Numerous examples show how the plots from the Old-Russian history were used to legitimate the joining of Ukraine to Russia, among others the fi ght for unifi cation under the sceptre if the Tsar of all Eastern-Slavic lands. It considers in details a Ukrainian historical and political treatise, earlier rarely used by scholars, created on the basis of the Polish-language edition of the «A description of Sarmatian Europe» of Alessandro Guagnini. In the appendix, two editions of the treatise are published.
