- Abstract
- In the literatures of Yugoslavia, Modernism made itself known in the 1950s and has been remaining on the evanescence more than two decades. Its representatives, feeling that traditional realistic forms were exhausted and social realism had no prospects, turned, in their philosophy and aesthetics, to Modernism as it was understood in Western Europe and America. This trend was characterised by rupture with earlier historic experience of artistic creation, endeavour to establish new, non-traditional foundations, permanent renewal of artistic methods. Using the poetics of Modernism, they were searching for a way of artistic dissidence, a form of opposition to the ruling ideology.
