Abstract
In the traditional Slavic culture, dance and round dance were considered as a form of ritual behaviour. They were widely «used» in magic, calendar rituals and wedding-ceremonies. At the same time, dance and round dance were regarded as ungodly and «demonic» forms of leisure-time. The Russian Orthodox Church condemned dancing, round dancing, singing, swing and similar forms of leisure. It was believed that people, inclined to such a pastime, should be punished, up to the death-penalty.
