Abstract
Sports culture, being a rather dynamic and fl exible component in any ethnic culture, is instrumental in the process of reproduction, maintenance, and development of ethnic groups. It strengthens social and cultural links with the past and is an indicator of cultural identity trends. The author undertakes an analysis of the phenomenon and attempts to answer the question what sets traditional sport practices apart from the institutionalized modern sports, as well as why it is that not every traditional sport practice becomes a type of modern sport. He discusses a range of issues related to the place of traditional sport in the contemporary society, its prospects, and others.
