Abstract

The acute crisis of 1980-1981 in Poland caused anxiety among the leaders of other EasternEuropean countries including Janos Kadar in Hungary, who was calling to his mind the events of the autumn 1956 in his own country. During the course of the Polish crisis, Kadar advocated political means of its solution. Nevertheless, he entirely supported the emergency measures implemented by General W. Jaruzelski on December 13, 1981. The Hungarian leader was sure that only radical steps could prevent possible Soviet military action, extremely harmful for the international Communist movement.
